The Four Narrative

The Four Narrative Tenses:

1. Past Simple
  • For main events/completed actions in sequence
  • Example: "She opened the door and walked inside."

2. Past Continuous
  • For background actions that were in progress
  • Sets the scene
  • Example: "It was raining and the wind was blowing."

3. Past Perfect
  • For actions that happened BEFORE other past actions
  • Shows which event came first
  • Example: "She realized she had left her keys at home." (leaving keys happened before realizing)

4. Past Perfect Continuous
  • For longer actions that were in progress before another past action
  • Emphasizes duration
  • Example: "He was tired because he had been working all day."

How They Work Together:
"When I arrived at the party (past simple), everyone was dancing (past continuous). Sarah looked upset because her boyfriend had just left (past perfect). She had been crying (past perfect continuous) and her eyes were red."
