Past Perfect Tense Lesson - Intermediate Level
The Structure:
Positive: had + past participle (verb 3)
- I/You/He/She/It/We/They had eaten
- I had finished my homework
Negative: had + not + past participle
- I hadn't seen that movie before
- They hadn't arrived yet
Question: Had + subject + past participle?
- Had you met him before?
- Had she left already?
When Do We Use It?
Use 1: To show which action happened FIRST in the past
When you have two past actions, use Past Perfect for the earlier one.
Timeline: PAST PERFECT ← happened first | PAST SIMPLE ← happened second
- When I arrived at the cinema, the movie had already started.
- (First: movie started → Second: I arrived)
- She was sad because her dog had died.
- (First: dog died → Second: she felt sad)
- I couldn't get into my house because I had lost my keys.
- (First: lost keys → Second: couldn't get in)
Use 2: With "before," "after," "by the time," "when"
- By the time we got to the airport, the plane had taken off.
- After he had finished his exam, he went home.
- I had never tried sushi before I visited Japan.
- When I woke up, my roommate had already left.
Use 3: Past experiences up to a point in the past
Like Present Perfect, but in the past!
- By 2020, I had visited 15 countries. (experiences up to 2020)
- She had never seen snow until she moved to Canada.
- Had you ever flown before that trip?
Use 4: Explaining or giving reasons for past situations
- He was exhausted because he had worked all night.
- The streets were wet because it had been raining.
- I wasn't hungry because I had just eaten.

Epic Fails:
- I got to the concert and realized I had left my ticket at home!
- She posted the photo before she had checked if she looked good in it.
- I had already sent the angry text when I realized I was wrong. Oops!
Dating & Relationships:
- He had already met someone else when I finally decided to tell him how I felt.
- I knew we had matched on Tinder before, but I couldn't remember when.
- By the time she called me back, I had already made other plans.
School & Work:
- The teacher was angry because I hadn't done my homework.
- When the deadline arrived, I hadn't even started the project.
- By the time I checked my email, my boss had already sent three reminders!
Technology Problems:
- I lost all my photos because I hadn't backed them up.
- My battery had died, so I couldn't call for help.
